Der plötzliche Herztod (pHt) aufgrund maligner Herzrhythmusstörungen (mHrst) stellt mit ca. 100.000 Todesfällen allein in Deutschland pro Jahr ein herausragendes Problem im öffentlichen Gesundheitswesen dar. In den letzten Jahren wurde die Therapie maligner Herzrhythmusstörungen ständig verbessert. Besonders hervorzuheben bei der Therapie maligner Herzrhythmusstörungen und bei der Prävention des plötzlichen Herztodes ist der implantierbare Cardioverter/Defibrillator. Da dieser jedoch sehr teuer ist, kommen nur ausgewählte Patienten mit bekannt hohem Risiko für diese Form der Therapie in Frage.
