Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) represent the most poisonous substances known and cause the rare but potentially life-threatening disease botulism. Diagnostics of botulism is a highly challenging task, as minute amounts of more than 40 different BoNT sero- and subtypes must be detected from complex sample matrices. To date, the gold-standard method for BoNT detection is still the ethically controversial mouse bioassay.
