Sternale Instabilität nach einer aorto-koronaren Bypassoperation mittels medianer Sternotomie ist eine relativ seltene, jedoch ernste Komplikation, die mit einer erheblichen Mortalitätsrate einhergeht. Besonders sind hierbei adipöse Patienten gefährdet. Die optimale Verschlussmethode ist Gegenstand einer kontroversen Debatte.
