Indentation of orogenic lithosphere in the Eastern Alps by the impinging Adriatic microplate triggered rapid exhumation by doming, normal faulting and erosion focussed in the Tauern Window. This window is the most prominent tectonic window in the Alps and exposes the core of the Alpine orogen, a Paleogene nappe stack derived from the European plate. The cooling history of the Tauern Window varies along its strike [Favaro et al., 2015], with rapid cooling affecting some structures as early as 24 Ma (Sonnblick Subdome) in the eastern Tauern Window (ETD, Eastern Tauern Dome) compared to 20-18 Ma for domed units in the western part (WTD, Western Tauern Dome).
