Homeostasis describes the fundamental biological ability of individuals to maintain stable internal conditions in a changing environment. The homeostatic system is pivotal for the survival of individuals but also for the survival of entire species. It requires complex regulatory mechanisms to appropriately react to internal and external changes. These reactions include internal adjustments as well as behavioral responses.
