Als intrinsische Spannungsklemme stabilisieren KCNQ Kanäle demnach das Ruhemembranpotential und verhindern Übererregbarkeit, wie Epilepsie-verursachende Mutationen in den humanen Genen für KCNQ2 und KCNQ3 verdeutlichen. Neben der Expression im Gehirn konnten die neuronalen KCNQ Ionenkanäle 2 – 5 auch im somatosensorischen System nachgewiesen werden.
