Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory condition of the central nervous system (CNS), in which myelin-specific T cells seem to be responsible for the orchestration of an autoimmune reaction that leads to demyelination, as well as axonal and neuronal damage. Research in the field of neuroinflammation has tended to focus exclusively on CNS-specific lymphocytes of the adaptive immune system, while the implications of antigen-independent processes triggered by non-CNS specific lymphocytes such as CNS-unrelated T cells or natural killer (NK) cells, remains underexplored.
