Einleitung: Die Herzratenvariabilität (HRV) ist eine einfache und nichtinvasive Methode, den Funktionszustand des vegetativen Nervensystems, vor allem des parasympathischen Anteils, zu beurteilen. Untersuchungen der HRV bei schizophrenen Patienten weisen auf eine reduzierte kardiale vagale Aktivität hin, die möglicherweise zum erhöhten kardiovaskulären Mortalitätsrisiko dieser Patienten beiträgt. Bei katatonen Schizophrenien können vegetative Störungen im Fall der malignen Katatonie zu lebensbedrohlichen Zuständen führen.
