International audienceThe count of Burgundy in the early fifteenth century was the sovereign lord in his county, thus holding the power of high justice. However, on his own estate, he was also the lord of lower and middle justice. Enforcement was implemented by a personnel who were organized into a hierarchy but whose limits of power were at times imprecise. Power at the lower judicial level was often in the hands of adjudicateurs and thus difficult to define. The bailliage roughly corresponded to middle justice but also took charge of the numerous requests to review sentences that had been delivered by lower courts (appeals).
