Accrescere le potenzialità del Learning Analytics attraverso la formazione dei docenti alla Social Network Analysis - Increase the potential of Learning Analytics through the training of teachers in Social Network Analysis

Learning Analytics aims to build a pedagogical approach adapted to the complexity of contemporary society. In order to profile the students and get detailed feedback on their learning, L.A. techniques use Big Data, managed by algorithms that feed on the sensitive data of the students in order to control their performance and orient - in an educational sense - their behaviors. Each student is systematically monitored during his or her activities on the Net, which, on the one hand, may favour the personalization of the teaching-learning process, but on the other hand it raises questions about respect for privacy and the protection of the personal data collected. The combination of Learning Analytics and Social Network Analysis, then, offers the opportunity to frame students in those virtual social environments from which they usually get information, cultural content and behavioral patterns. In monitoring students within their relational networks, however, it is necessary to consider the multiple pitfalls that they may encounter when they abandon dedicated educational platforms and navigate the "open sea" of the Net. The tools to be used in support of L.A. should therefore include training activities for teachers, aimed at making them aware of the difficulties associated with monitoring students in the "social" universe, within which informal learning processes are often contaminated by cultural, ethnic and gender stereotypes. Il Learning Analytics ha l'obiettivo di costruire un approccio pedagogico adeguato alla complessità della società contemporanea. Per profilare gli studenti e avere feedback dettagliati sul loro apprendimento, le tecniche di LA si servono di Big Data, gestiti da algoritmi che si alimentano dei dati sensibili degli studenti al fine di controllarne le prestazioni e orientarne – in senso educativo – i comportamenti. Ciascuno studente viene sistematicamente monitorato nel corso delle sue attività in Rete, il che se, da una parte, può favorire la personalizzazione del processo di insegnamento- apprendimento, pone comunque interrogativi sul rispetto della privacy e sulla tutela dei dati personali raccolti. La saldatura tra Learning Analytics e Social Network Analysis, poi, offre l’opportunità di inquadrare gli studenti in quegli ambienti sociali virtuali dai quali essi solitamente traggono informazioni, contenuti culturali e modelli comportamentali. Nel monitorare gli studenti all’interno delle loro reti relazionali, tuttavia, occorre considerare le molteplici insidie nelle quali essi possono imbattersi quando, abbandonate le piattaforme didattiche dedicate, prendono a navigare nel “mare aperto” della Rete. Tra gli strumenti da utilizzare a supporto della LA dovrebbero rientrare, pertanto, attività di formazione rivolte ai docenti, finalizzate a renderli consapevoli delle difficoltà connesse al monitoraggio degli studenti nell’universo “social”, al cui interno i processi di apprendimento informali sono spesso contaminati da stereotipi culturali, etnici e di genere
