The energy conversion efficiency of CIGS thin-film solar cells have been measured to increase when alkali metals are added as impurities. This work contributes to the atomic level understanding of the structural changes that the added impurities cause. (Cu, Alk)InSe2 chalcopyrite structures with lithium, sodium, potassium or rubidium alkali metal impurities are numerically modeled by utilizing ab-initio structural energy calculations and the cluster expansion formalism. Phase boundary diagrams are solved from the cluster expansion by using the Monte Carlo simulation. The resulting phase diagrams show that Rb and K impurities form secondary phases to the structure whereas Na and Li impurities stay in the mixed phase. This agrees with ear...
