Henri Cosquer a donné son nom à la grotte, près de Marseille, devenue sous-marine, qu’il a découverte et explorée au péril de sa vie : la seule, sans doute, ornée de peintures et gravures paléolithiques, en majorité découvertes le 9 juillet 1991. A été établie, par les Laboratoires C.N.R.S./C.E.A. une ancienneté record de l’art humain : entre 26 000 et 28 000 ans pour les mains négatives; par ailleurs, entre 18000 et 19000 pour les animaux peints et gravés. L’étude visée ici, est l’analyse des images d’animaux. Son bilan des espèces est confronté à un bilan pour tout l’art paléolithique. Ont été comptés 45 mains et une centaine d’animaux.
