The public sphere as the founding concept of communication

Le concept d’espace public tel que défini par Habermas en 1961 est un des éléments centraux des théories de l’information et de la communication autour duquel de nombreux débats se sont développés et ont contribué à fonder les assises théoriques de cette discipline. Le concept a été abondamment discuté, dans la place excessive qu’il accorderait à l’argumentation ou la trop faible prise en compte des médias dans le dispositif social mis en place dans les sociétés dites postmodernes. Mais les nouvelles formes participatives qui émergent à travers les réseaux sociaux doivent être l’occasion de réinventer un concept qui reste toujours opératoire.The concept of the public sphere as defined by Habermas in 1961 is one of the core components of information and communication theory, around which a great deal of debate has developed and helped to lay the theoretical foundations of the discipline. The concept has been much discussed, with regard to its exaggeration of the role of argumentation or the inadequate consideration given to the social system that has become established in our socalled post-modern societies. But the new participatory patterns emerging through social networks should be seen as an opportunity to reinvent a concept that has lost none of its relevance
