The atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration has risen from 278 parts per million (ppm) in 1750 to 390.5 ppm in 2011. This increase is caused by anthropogenic emission, predominantly fossil fuel combustion. There is sufficient capacity in the oceans to take up to 70 to 80% of this amount, however, due to the large time scale of this process it can take several hundred years to reach this value. The response of these sinks to a changing climate are important to predict the future behaviour of the carbon cyclewith increasing emissions.
