AN ANALYSIS OF ILLOCUTIONARY ACTS UTTERANCE BY KAI IN 47 RONIN MOVIES BY CARL RINSCH

In communication, a speaker through his utterance does not only utter the sounds of the language, but also performs the act of doing something. That is called by speech act. Illocutionary act is a part of speech acts. In daily life, speech act is often met in many aspects one of them is in movie, such as 47 Ronin movie directed by Carl Rinsch. This research analyzed the use of illocutionary acts utterance by Kai as the main character in 47 Ronin movie and the underlying context behind the illocutionary acts used. While the objectives of this research are to find out the types of illocutionary acts used by Kai as the main character and to elaborate the context underlying behind the illocutionary acts used. The research design of this study was descriptive qualitative because the writer attempted to describe and analyze the selected illocutionary acts used in the form of words and the data was explained descriptively. The object of this study was Kai, the main character of 47 Ronin. This research analyzed of type of illocutionary acts used by seeing the conversations among the main character which are dealing with illocutionary acts. As the result of the study, the researcher found that Kai as the main character used all types of illocutionary acts. They were representative (asserting, notifying, stating, etc.), directive (ordering, asking, requesting, and commanding), commissive, (vowing and promising) expressive, (disappointing, thanking, apologizing) and declarative (naming, declaring). Also, there were some contexts behind the illocutionary acts used by Kai. It included the participants, setting, and events
