Start-ups’ decisions and their impact on performance

This dissertation investigates initial decisions and owner’s characteristics of 4928 US start-ups born in 2004. These choices relate to Business characteristics and Human Capital of the founder. Data on the first eight years of operation was made available by the yearly Kauffman Firm Survey. After analyzing the characteristics and initial decisions of the newborn firms, their relationship with the initial access to funding was studied. It indicates that multiple owners, in particular and Human Capital have a positive impact on total access to funding and other more specific credit sources. The data covers the years of 2004 through 2011 which allowed the investigation of the correlation between Business, Founder and Financial characteristics of the firms and their performance both in the pre and during the crisis period. The performance measures used are Change in Assets, Revenues, Net Profits, and Duration. The pre-crisis regression shows a distinctive positive connection between Multiple Owners, Specific Human Capital and the amount of Total and Trade Financing with multiple measures of performance. Lastly, the recession model indicates possible mitigators of the impact of the crisis such as the Number of Employees, Intellectual Property, Work Experience in the same Industry and the Percentage of Outside Financing used.Esta dissertação tem como objetivo a investigação de escolhas práticas de 4928 start-ups dos EUA nascidas em 2004 e dos seus fundadores. Estas escolhas são representadas na forma de variáveis sobre características de Negócio e de Capital Humano do fundador. Os primeiros oito anos de operação foram disponibilizados pelo Kauffman Firm Survey, um inquérito anual. Depois de analisadas as características e decisões iniciais destas novas empresas, estudou-se a sua relação com Financiamento Inicial acedido. Esse estudo indica que Múltiplos Proprietários, em particular, e Capital Humano têm impacto na quantidade de Financiamento Total acedido e em algumas fontes de crédito em específico. Os dados disponibilizados sobre as start-ups correspondem aos anos de 2004 a 2011 que permitiram uma investigação da correlação entre características de Negócio, do Fundador e de Financiamento das firmas com a sua performance durante o período de crise, assim como durante o período que antecedeu. As medidas de performance escolhidas são a Alteração no Ativo, Receitas, Resultados Líquidos e Tempo em Operação. As regressões de pré-crise demonstram uma ligação distinta entre Múltiplos Donos, Capital Humano Específico e a quantidade de Crédito Comercial com múltiplas medidas de Performance. Por último, o modelo referente à recessão indica possíveis mitigadores do impacte da crise como o Número de Empregados, Propriedade Intelectual, Experiência Prévia de Trabalho na mesma Indústria e a Percentagem de Financiamento Externo utilizado
