Specifically, we evaluate the extent to which bird species classified into different ecological groups occur in a gradient from the inner city to surrounding residential areas, a corridor of green space, and finally the neighbouring less affected non-urban forest-and-meadow matrix in one medium-sized city. As the effective area of sufficiently natural habitat increases considerably in the gradient from the centre to the periphery of the city we predict parallel trends in the capacity of these strata to host bird species with diverse ecological characteristics.A functional network of green space is important for the maintenance of the ecological dimension of a sustainable urban landscape.
