This thesis deals with transport congestion in urban areas, and with the links between it and the locations of jobs and households. It is organized in three parts. The first one is a literature revue on the questions of urban growth and structure, followed by an analysis of congestion in transport systems. The second part is dedicated to the analysis of the spatial expressions of congestion in the Greater Paris Region, based notably on different spatial aggregation methods of congestion indicators. Finally, in the third part, I develop an urban equilibrium model describing the locations of households with respect to their workplace.
