La production d'un espace : débuts lotharingiens et pratiques de la frontière (IXe-XIe siècle)

National audienceIf there is a space that is problematic, complicated to define, and difficult even to name, it is Lotharingia. We begin by presenting the terms used for this political space created in the ninth century, distinguishing in particular between Francia Media, Lotharingia and Lorraine. We then detail its territorial changes, from the kingdom of Lothar II through to the eleventh century, which raises the thorny question of the delimitation of this space whose frontiers are so complex to perceive and to map. Finally, we consider what the consequences of these changes of frontier were for the aristocracy of this space 'in-between'.S'il est un espace problématique, compliqué à définir, difficile même à nommer, c'est bien la Lotharingie. Nous présentons tout d'abord la dénomination de cet espace politique qui est créé au IXe siècle, en distinguant notamment Francia Media, Lotharingie et Lorraine. Nous détaillons ensuite les différents changements territoriaux du royaume de Lothaire II jusqu'au XIe siècle, ce qui nous amènera à soulever l'épineuse question de la délimitation de cet espace aux frontières complexes à appréhender et à cartographier. Enfin, nous nous demanderons quelles furent les conséquences spatiales de ces changements de frontière en Lotharingie sur les aristocraties de cet espace de l'entre-deux
