The purpose of this study is to create land use mesh maps in Tokyo and Osaka Metropolitan Areas and to analyze their land use changes. The method is as follows. First, 1 to 50,000 scale topographic maps in 1920s, 1960s, and 2001 were collected and scanned as TIFF image files. Second, 1/2 standard mesh data in the two metropolitan areas was created. Third, dominant land use was made out and input as category data by 1/2 standard mesh in the three years. This study could clarify the spatio-temporal characteristics of land use patterns and their changes in Tokyo and Osaka
