Factors Related to the Foot Care Adherence on Patients with Diabetes Mellitus

Foot care adherence is needed for patients with diabetes mellitus to prevent diabetic ulcers. Foot care with correct method can reduce risk of diabetic ulcers and amputates in diabetic’s patients. Factors associated with foot care adherence including age, educational level, duration of diabetes mellitus, marital status, and family support. The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with foot care adherence in patients with diabetes mellitus. The research method was correlation analysis using cross sectional design with a sample size of 25 respondents. The sampling technique used consecutive sampling. The data collection used questionnaires by respondents and accompanied by the researcher. The result of the study showed that 68% of respondents categorized adherence, and 32% showed non-adherence. Statistical analysis showed that there was a significant correlation (p < 0,05) between foot care adherence with family support (p = 0,009), and gender (p = 0,037). The importance of identifying factors associated with foot care adherence in diabetes mellitus patients was to reduce the risk of foot disruptions, especially in diabetic ulcers.
