On the threshold of the modern age theories emerged that were contrary to the theological concepts predominating in the Middle Ages. The Italian thinker Nicolas Machiavelli (1469-1527) representing the nascent middle class is the typical exponent this epistemological rupture in social thinking. According to him society does not develop due to the divine will but according to natural laws and the causes that generate the development in history these being material interests and force.
