Este artigo examina aspectos da história semântica do conceito de Spanish America nos Estados Unidos do século XIX. A análise de discursos e textos de políticos, funcionários de governo, jornalistas e intelectuais americanos indica a tendência de se imputar a Spanish America e seus habitantes características opostas àquelas atribuídas à auto-imagem coletiva americana. Ademais, nota-se que essas qualidades negativas se aglutinam em torno de três "regiões" semânticas": cultural, temporal e racial.
