As UCPs constituem um subgrupo das proteínas carreadoras mitocondriais que estão localizadas na membrana mitocondrial interna. Por meio da dissipação do gradiente de próton, elas desacoplam a fosforilação oxidativa e convertem combustível em calor. Foram identificadas quatro isoformas da UCP.
