O método padrão para diagnosticar a suscetibilidade à hipertermia maligna é o teste da contratura muscular in vitro em resposta ao halotano e à cafeína. A síndrome maligna por neurolépticos caracteriza-se por hipertermia, síndrome extrapiramidal, acidose, instabilidade neurovegetativa e alterações neurológicas.
