The Finnish higher education system comprises two parallel sectors: universities and polytechnics. Universities focus on scientific research and education. Polytechnics are professionally oriented higher education institutions. In addition to their educational role, polytechnics conduct R&D that serves teaching and the world of work. There are 20 universities in Finland: 10 multi-faculty institutions, 3 universities of technology, 3 schools of economics and business administration, and 4 art academies. There are 29 polytechnics, most of which are multifield higher education institutions. The provision of higher education in Finland is extensive.
