HISTORY AND VIOLENCE IN BLOOD MERIDIAN

This thesis presents an interpretation of Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian as a reconstruction of the Western genre and a reaction to Western settler-colonial historical narratives and myths, to which it responds by building its own mythology to an entirely opposite effect. The mythologized world McCarthy presents to us is an inversion of Hegel’s absolute idealism, with Hegel’s Spirit of freedom and progress being replaced by a Spirit of evil and violence. McCarthy’s characters are all psychologically opaque: we only see what they do and see, not what they think and feel. Violence is also depicted under such terms. McCarthy rejects the Enlightenment ideal of historical progress. In the novel, history is just an endless cycle of violence.Ovaj završni rad predstavlja interpretaciju Krvavog Meridijana Cormaca McCarthyja kao rekonstrukcije Western žanra i reakcije na zapadnjačke kolonijalno-naseljeničke pripovijesti i mitove, na koje odgovara tako da razvija vlastitu mitologiju, sa potpuno suprotnim učinkom. Mitologizirani svijet kojeg nam McCarthy predstavlja je inverzija Hegelovog apsolutnog idealizma, s tim da Hegelovog Duha slobode i napretka zamjenjuje Duh zla i nasilja. McCarthyjevi likovi su svi psihološki neprozirni: samo vidimo ono što oni rade i vide, ne ono što misle i osjećaju. Nasilje je također prikazano pod tim uvjetima.
