Activities related to petroleum industry often lead to hydrocarbon contamination of soil and water. For many years, mechanical and chemical methods have been the only way for removing hydrocarbons from contaminated sites. Since these methods often have limited effectiveness and can be very expensive, the aim is to replace them with more efficient and cost-effective methods, such as microbial degradation by indigenous microorganisms in water and soil capable of degrading hydrocarbon contaminants.
