THE SECRETS OF COLORS IN THE PAINTINGS OF THE DALMATIAN PAINTING SCHOOL ACCORDING TO PRESERVED BOOKS ABOUT PAINTING - SELECTED EXANPLES

Rad ne sadrži sažetak.The aim of this study is to establish the relationship of practices regarding the fabrication of materials made available to artists on the eastern Adriatic coast, during medieval and early Renaissance periods from 14th to 16th century. In a desire to reveal the technology and to understand medieval artist's – technologist's and "alchemist's" way of work relating to the preparation of paints, pigments and chemicals, a large number of treatises from the manuscripts by author Cennino Cennini (Il Libro dell'arte, c.1400) and Bologna manuscript (Segreti per colori, c. 1450) were selected for a more thorough analysis. Detailed and accurate explanation of processes and material ingredients is an important component in reflection about the individual's way of creating works of art. By understanding the possible structure and composition of works, it is easier to identify the art piece, as well as knowing the material more accurately gains more access to restoration. Systematic examination and analysis of artwork coincides with a renewed interest in transcribing old manuscripts regarding painting technologies. Beginnings of this practice are linked to the activities of Split's first restoration workshop which focused on work of Dalmatian masters of art. Moreover, newer published restauration-conservation researches on paintings that were ordered and purchased directly from workshops of Italian, almost as a rule Venetian masters, such as Vittore Carpaccio, Tizian and Tintoretto, emphasise the importance of understanding artist's pigments production technology, and manuscripts in which they are explained
