Razvoj novih metoda za određivanje pojedinih analita ionskom kromatografijom dugotrajan je proces koji se najčešće temelji na metodi pokušaja i pogreške. Osim što pronalazak optimalnih uvjeta poput koncentracije eluensa, temperature sustava ili vremena trajanja analize oduzima puno vremena, nepovoljan je i s ekonomskog aspekta jer se troši velika količina raznoraznih reagensa. Kako bi se smanjili troškovi i vrijeme potrebno za razvoj novih metoda koriste se modeli vremena zadržavanja. Svrha ovog rada je izraditi gradijentni model vremena zadržavanja ugljikohidrata u ionskoj kromatografiji, a na temelju eksperimentalno određenih vrijednosti vremena zadržavanja pojedinih komponenata pri četirima jakostima eluensa.
