Knowledge of stratospheric turbulence is still limited, but important for the atmospheric energy balance and the mixing of trace species. A recent balloon-borne instrument which measures turbulent fluctuations in wind and temperature has been improved significantly. For several new flights performed, features of observed dissipation rates can be explained by atmospheric background conditions. Results are compared to an alternative method for turbulence estimation, the Thorpe analysis of radiosonde data, and limitations of the latter method are clearly revealed.
