Toksoplazmoza je bolest od koje obolijevaju sve vrste toplokrvnih životinja (sisavci i ptice) i čovjek. Bolest uzrokuje mikroskopski malen, jednostaničan parazit Toxoplasma gondii, koji je proširen po cijelom svijetu pa tako i kod nas. Pretpostavlja se da je oko 50% ljudske populacije u nekom razdoblju svog života bilo u kontaktu sa toksoplazmozom. Toksoplazmoza je opasna u osoba sa oslabljenim imunološkim sustavom i trudnica. Ako se infekcija dogodi u trudnoći, parazit može inficirati fetus i stvoriti ozbiljne zdravstvene probleme, pa čak i smrt fetusa. Domaće i divlje mačke su jedini pravi konačni domaćini T. gondii, za razliku od svih ostalih životinja i čovjeka koji su prijelazni domaćini. To znači da se samo u mačaka odvija cjelokupni razvojni ciklus parazita i da samo one izbacuju uzročnika (oocistu) putem fecesa. U životinja invazija najčešće protječe bez simptoma.
