Činjenica da je elektropećna prašina opasni proizvodni otpad kao i to da nije iz ekonomskih razloga preporučljivo njeno odlaganje na odlagalištu, ukazuje na potrebu njenog prevođenja u neopasni otpad kojeg je moguće zbrinuti bez naknadnog štetnog djelovanja u okolišu, ili pak njene oporabe. Razvojem ekološke svijesti i unapređenjem zakonskih propisa kojima se osigurava zaštita okoliša kao i gospodarenje otpadom, pristupilo se sustavnom rješavanju problema elektropećne prašine- opasnog proizvodnog otpada i to kako s ekološkog tako i s ekonomskog stajališta što je imalo za posljedicu razvoj različitih postupaka oporabe elektropećne prašine.
