Multiphase machines have a higher efficiency, greater fault tolerance, lower torque ripple and reduced rated power electronics rating compared to their three-phase counterparts. However, the drive system and control is more complicated for the multiphase machines. A novel drive system for a split-phase permanent magnet motor and dual inverters is presented and explained in this paper.
