Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays important roles in brain plasticity and repair, and it influences stroke outcomes in animal models. Circulating BDNF concentrations are lowered in patients with traumatic brain injury, and low BDNF predicts poor recovery after this injury.
