To optimize the production of a value added compound while avoiding toxic consequences on the cell viability, a challenge in the metabolic engineering field is to balance the endogenous metabolic fluxes and the newly consumed fluxes. In this optimization context, combinatorial strategies can generate several variants of synthetic metabolic pathways. This strategy gives precious strategic information on the right combinations of function and regulation choices to be made in the ultimate pathway reconstruction.
