Forensic mtDNA analysis of breed assignment based on dog mitogenome sequences

Forenzika kao znanost bavi se prikupljanjem i analizom dokaznog materijala s mjesta zločina. Vrlo često se u forenzičkim analizama koristi mitohondrijska DNA zbog većeg broja kopija od nuklearne DNA, nasljeđivanja putem majčinske linije i ne-rekombinacije. Mitohondrijska analiza životinjske dlake s mjesta zločina mogla bi pomoći u istrazi. U ovom radu postavlja se pitanje da li i u kojoj mjeri mtDNA analiza životinjske dlake pomaže u istrazi, te može li se otkriti pasmina, tj. jedinka čija je dlaka pronađena. Korištene su DNA sekvence pasa prikupljene iz banke gena, a rezultati su grafički prikazani pomoću specijalističkih softvera. Većina pasa ima neku od mtDNA haplotipova, no iako sama analiza ne daje sigurnu potvrdu pasmine, daje nam informaciju o majčinskoj liniji, a time i pretpostavku o mogućoj pasmini analiziranog uzorka.Forensic sciences are collecting and analyzing evidences from a crime scene. Forensic analysis often uses mitochondrial DNA due to a large number of copies of nuclear DNA inheritance through the mother line and non-recombination. Mitochondrial analysis of animal hair from the crime scene could help investigators in their investigation of a crime scene. This paper raises questions whether and to what extent mtDNA analysis of animal hair helps in investigation and whether a breed can be detected from hair that has been found. The DNA sequence of dogs collected from the gene bank was used, and the results were graphically displayed using specialized software. Most dogs have some of the mtDNA haplotypes, but although the assay itself does not provide a breed confirmation, it gives us information on the maternal line, and hence the assumption of a possible breed of the analyzed sample
