Ampelographic and production characteristics of selected clone candidates of 'Plavac mali' and 'Plavina'

'Plavac mali' and 'Plavina' are Croatian native grapevine varieties, the two most economically important for Croatian viticulture and positioning Croatia on the wine map of the world. Because of the high level of intravarietal variability within population, in the past years, clonal selection was started with the aim to ensure a healthy and high-quality planting material. This research was conducted on five clonal candidates 'Plavac mali' and four clonal candidates 'Plavina' which are selected from different vineyards, planted and grown under the same conditions in experimental vineyard Baštica to determinate they characteristics and investigate the level of variability between them. In addition to determine the chemical composition (concentration of sugar, total acidity and the pH value) this study also included the polyphenol composition in must because these compounds are very important for future examination of clone candidates with the goal of getting the superior clone candidate.
