Spužve (koljeno Porifera) su morfološki najjednostavnije životinje (carstvo Metazoa) koje su se najranije odvojile od ostalih metazoa. Usprkos njihovoj morfološkoj jednostavnosti, istraživanja transkriptoma spužava i jednog genoma spužve ukazali su na iznenađujuću kompleksnost genoma u sadržaju gena koji nalikuju onima morfološki kompleksnijih životinja. Informacije iz dodatnih svojti potrebne su kako bi se bolje definirali odnosi unutar koljena Porifera, ali i njihov odnos prema cijelom carstvu životinja.
