In the 1980s and 1990s, success of laparoscopic approach in cholecystetcomy introduced laparoscopy as a treatment option in various diagnosis. In past 20 years, laparoscopic approach became increasingly popular for treating patients with colorectal cancer. Numerous studies have stressed the advatages of laparoscopic approach compared to open surgery which is quantified in reduced blood loss, earlier postoperative bowel movements, lower complication rates and shorter hospital stay. These advantages led to laparoscopic approach being considered as a modality of treting colorectal cancer.
