Textile production in Magna Graecia: preliminary considerations

Abstract: The paper focuses on some case studies in order to provide the first general picture of textile production in Magna Graecia through the analysis of textile instruments from archaeological contexts dating from the 9th-1st centuries BC. They include the Incoronata necropolis, a late Archaic house of Kaulonia, the Square Building in the Sanctuary of Hera near the mouth of the River Sele of Poseidonia-Paestum, several houses of Herakleia, some 3rd-2nd century BC farms of the chorai of Herakleia and Metapontion, and Tarentine weights discovered in Herakleia. All the contexts have been systematically analysed and the methods of investigation based on the research conducted at the Centre for Textile Research in Copenhagen have been applied to study these implements. Results of loom weight analysis are particularly interesting: an increment of the warp density can be linked to the introduction of the second hole and contemporaneous emergence of high-quality warp yarn. The parallel study of textile remains demonstrates that these results are reliable. Riassunto: Il presente contributo presenta un primo quadro generale sulla produzione tessile in Magna Grecia attraverso il confronto tra le analisi condotte sulla strumentazione tessile di alcuni contesti archeologici campione datati tra l’VIII e il II secolo a.C. Tali siti sono la necropoli dell’Incoronata, una casa tardo-arcaica di Caulonia, l’Edificio quadrato presso l’Heraion alla foce del Sele di Paestum, alcune case di Eraclea di Lucania, alcune fattorie di III-II secolo a.C. delle chorai eracleota e metapontina, nonché alcuni pesi tarantini rinvenuti a Eraclea. Tutti questi contesti sono stati sistematicamente analizzati e ai materiali sono stati applicati i nuovi metodi di analisi sviluppato presso il Centre for Textile Research in Copenhagen. I risultati relativi ai pesi da telaio sono particolarmente interessanti: un incremento della densità degli orditi può essere collegato con l’introduzione del secondo foro pervio ed emerge contemporaneamente una buona qualità generale dei filati lavorati.
