The article presents a typology of different surnames of the inhabitants of Cieszyn of the new Polish period. The analytical material is presented on the basis of the following division: surnames from full first names, shortened first names as family surnames, surnames in the form of hypocoristics and deminutives, patronymic surnames (created from father’s first names), surnames created by means of a complex suffix, first name-related surnames of a double motivation. The very material proves the abundance of anthroponymic processes shaping a typology of different surnames determined by among other things linguistic, cultural, ethnic and socio-legal factors
