The author of the article confronts the concept of bilingualism with the knowledge of language. The lack of reliable phonetic and phonological knowledge is a shortcoming of a teacher of Polish, regardless of the type of class being taught (native speakers or foreign students). In contemporary handbooks for Polish as a foreign language there is no information regarding pronunciation. This has caused the uncomfortable situation of teachers in Polish schools abroad and those teaching children coming to Poland from other countries. The next issue considered is this of a native language.
