Rozdział stanowi wprowadzenie do głównego tematu książki, którym są podejmowane w różnych formach przez nauczyciela praktyka tzw. badania w działaniu (ang. action research). Zaprezentowane zostały podstawowe założenia badania w działaniu, czyli dokonywanej przez nauczyciela w jego własnej klasie ewaluacji, mającej na celu usprawnienie procesów nauczania i uczenia się języka obcego. Autorka skupia swoją uwagę na poszczególnych etapach badania, a także trudnościach, jakie napotkać może podejmujący je nauczyciel, oraz sugestiach dotyczących rozwiązywania pojawiających się problemów.
