This work look at the way in which components of a text explicitly relate to each other in a way that constitutes cohesion, in the manner described by Halliday and Hasan (1976). It is a practical introduction designed, together with numerous examples, to show the various ways in which a text may be organised. It is divided into seven chapters, five of which deal with the five kinds of cohesion (i.e. reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction and lexical) as described by Halliday and Hasan. There is also discussion of the work of Hoey (1991) and his radical re-evaluation of lexical ellipsis together with an original analysis of a poem to show how such an approach is applicable even to literary texts
