The origin of high ammonium and sulphate concentrations, characterizing the saline groundwater of the Po River floodplain coastal aquifer, are documented. A detailed understanding of the hydrogeochemical conceptual model is built up using a hydrochemical (major ions, DOC, DIC and methane) and isotopic (delta N-15(NO3), delta N-15(NH4), delta O-18(NO3), delta S-34(SO4), delta(OSO4)-O-18 and delta(CDIC)-C-13) approach.
