The paper deals with the use of steel structures for seismic up-grading of both re-inforced concrete and masonry buildings. In particular, the performance-based seismic rehabilitation of RC frames and masonry walls using dissipative steel braces is presented. All the analyses are carried out according to performance requirements set out by FEMA. A damage-controlled nonlinear static procedure is used in the analysis of RC frames. Masonry walls are faced in the second part accounting for the influence of the scattering of masonry properties on the design of the upgrading system, leading to the definition of fragility curves.
