Current concepts concerning blood pressure (BP) in childhood are undergoing significant changes. A critical revision has been made of the relative importance of essential and secondary hypertension in childhood. Recent studies point to the existence of a good number of hypertensive children for whom an underlying cause is not found. The present review will briefly outline a number of correlates of blood pressure in childhood, review the possible causes of hypertension at this age, and provide an outline for a diagnostic and therapeutic workup of hypertensive children
