Dünyadaki enerji ihtiyacını karşılayan en önemli kaynaklardan biri olan fosil yakıtların yanması sonucunda oluşan sera gazları hem çevre kirliliğine, hem de küresel ısınmaya sebep olmaktadır. Bu nedenle, çevre dostu olan yenilenebilir enerji kaynaklarına ilgi artış göstermektedir. Bu hızlı trendi takip eden Türkiye Enerji Piyasası Düzenleme Kurumu (EPDK), 2013 yılından itibaren benzine ve motorine yerli katkı olarak, oranları her yıl arttırılmak üzere biyodizel ve etanol ilave zorunluluğu getirmiştir. Bu gelişme de yenilenebilir enerji kaynakları için etkin ve optimal yeşil tedarik zinciri ağı tasarımı çalışmalarının yapılmasını gerekli kılmaktadır.
