Alternative campus self-defense course: investigating student participant impact; a qualitative case study. This study examined the impact of an alternative self-defense course taught to college age students. The course was designed to address the risks of campus sexual assault. A unique component was the construction of the instructor perpetrators. The course provided participants the opportunity to interact in a final exam with an un-padded instructor to create a realistic representation of the campus serial rapist. Selected participants were chosen and interviewed utilizing a qualitative case study design. Participant impact highlights included creating powerful moments for change, designing self-defense courses to address campus rape with known perpetrators, and institutional responsibility for campus safety programs. Conclusions are contemporary self-defense programs available to colleges are not addressing the context of campus rape. This alternative course may begin to provide needed strategies to students with realistic information about their self-defense options.Thesis (Ph. D., Education)--University of Idaho, May 2008
